Class Petty Officer Clinton M. Woltering, USN
Musician First Class Clinton Woltering was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, and moved to Richmond, KY, during high school. He graduated from Madison Central High School in 2000 and received a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Kentucky in 2004. Prior to his appointment to the Naval Academy Band in 2007, he was pursuing a master of music degree from Indiana University where he was the graduate assistant to the brass department as well as studio assistant to his professor, Carl Lenthe. During his time at Indiana University, Petty Officer Woltering was active in both university and regional orchestras. He was principal trombonist of the IU Philharmonic, bass trombonist of the IU Concert Orchestra, and performed with the Columbus (IN) Philharmonic, Terra Haute Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, and bass trumpet with the Evansville Philharmonic. Aside from a strong background in jazz bands, wind bands, brass bands, and just about any other band that uses a trombone, Petty Officer Woltering is most active as a chamber musician. He was a founding member of the MOMUS Trombone Quartet, which was a finalist in the 2002 International Trombone Association Quartet Competition, and released a CD that same year entitled, “The Lexingport Project.” More recently, he has been a member of the Victory Brass Quintet (based in Lexington, KY) which recently released their debut CD entitled, “Tera Musika.” In the fall of 2004, Petty Officer Woltering was selected by Joseph Alessi, principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic, as one of twelve participants from around the world for the four-day Alessi Seminar in Fossano, Italy. He has also had additional studies under Pete Ellefson, Dee Stewart, Tom Brantley, Scott Hartman, James Markey, Ron Barron, Charlie Vernon, Matt Neiss, John Rojak, David Henderson, and Mark Clodfelter. Petty Officer Woltering currently serves as a member of the Concert Band, Next Wave jazz ensemble, brass quintet, and trombone quartet, as well as in marching and ceremonial units. His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.
