Musician First Class Christopher Buchanan hails from Fairfax, Virginia. He holds a Master of Music in Trumpet as well as Bachelor of Music degrees (summa cum laude) in both Trumpet and Composition from the University of Illinois. Additionally, in 2015 MU1 Buchanan will graduate with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet and a Master of Music in Musicology from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. His research deals primarily with music in Germany and northern Italy during the late renaissance and early baroque. MU1 Buchanan’s instructors have included Ronald Romm, Joe Burgstaller, Michael Ewald and Ed Hoffman.
MU1 Buchanan was recently appointed Second Trumpet in the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and has appeared with a number of regional ensembles, including the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra, and the Great Noise Ensemble. He also specializes in the performance of early music on both natural trumpet and cornetto.
In 2007, MU1 Buchanan auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Following recruit training at RTC, Great Lakes, he reported for duty as trumpeter marching band, brass quintet, and ceremonial units. He also serves as Staff Arranger and Composer, Auditions Assistant, and Assistant Command Fitness Leader.
MU1 Buchanan has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Navy Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.
