Chief Musician Todd Nix is a native of Grants Pass, Oregon and a 1988 graduate of Grants Pass High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon, and completed a Master of Music degree in tuba performance at the Indiana University School of Music, where he was a graduate assistant to Daniel Perantoni. His principal teachers include Harvey Phillips, Daniel Perantoni, Richard Frazier, and Floyd Cooley.
Prior to joining the Navy, MUC Nix performed frequently with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and Eugene Opera Company, and served as Adjunct Professor of Music at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. He has been recognized nationally for his ensemble work at both the Fischoff National Chamber Music Festival and the NY Brass Conference, and was awarded second place in the Mock Orchestral Audition Competition held at the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference in 1995.
In 1997 MUC Nix auditioned and was assigned for duty as tubist with the United States Naval Academy Band. He performs with the wind ensemble, marching band, and ceremonial units. His collateral duties include Unit Leader of the marching band, Operations Coordinator, Command Fitness Leader, and Chief in Charge of the Annapolis area complex funeral detail.
MUC Nix has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Navy Expert Rifleman Medal, and Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
