Master Chief Musician Bruce Smith is a native of El Reno, Oklahoma. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, and a Master of Music degree from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Additionally, he completed Human Resource Manager Certification from the University of Phoenix.

MUCM Smith enlisted in the Navy in 1986. After completing recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Navy Music Basic “A” Course, Little Creek, Virginia, graduating with a letter of commendation. His first tour of duty was with Navy Band New Orleans where he performed as Lead Pan player with the one-of-a-kind U.S. Navy Steel Drum Band. 

In 1990, MUCM Smith auditioned and was selected for assignment with the U. S. Naval Academy Band as a member of the band's contemporary music ensemble, "Electric Brigade." He has additionally performed as a percussionist with the concert band, marching band, and ceremonial units. 

MUCM Smith is a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, Newport, Rhode Island (Class 147, Gold). In 2002, he completed training as a member of the first all-Navy class to be certified as Career Development Facilitators through the National Career Development Association. He is also a trained facilitator for the Career Options and Navy Skills Evaluation Program (CONSEP). He completed CONSEP facilitator training for Mid-Career Sailors at Groton, Connecticut in 2002, and First Term Sailors at Great Lakes, Illinois in 2004.

In January 2014, MUCM Smith assumed his current duty as Senior Enlisted Leader of the Naval Academy Band. Additionally, he serves as Enlisted Representative for the Midshipmen Pipes and Drums, and DANTES Test Control Officer for USNA/NSA Complex, Annapolis, Maryland. 

MUCM Smith has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (2 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (8 awards), National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Navy Expert Rifleman Medal, and Navy Expert Pistol Shot Medal.
