Every year the United States Naval Academy Band invites outstanding high school musicians to perform with them on their annual Side-by-Side Concert, also featuring the winner of the Student Concerto Competition. This year, selected students will join Lieutenant Commander Brian O. Walden and the band on April 4, 2008 in Mitscher Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy for an exciting musical performance. Students for the Side-by-Side Concert are selected based on their high school band director's recommendation, past participation in All-County and All-State events, and instrumentation requirements for a well-balanced ensemble. The Student Information and Nominations form should be completed by each Side-by-Side participant and Concerto Competition candidate; just mark the appropriate box. Candidates for the Concerto Competition will perform a standard solo piece for a panel of judges at the Naval Academy Band spaces on Monday, February 25th at 4:00 pm. If the piece is a multi-movement work, a student should select and prepare only one movement. Piano accompaniment is not required for the audition; however, a piano will be available for students who wish to provide their own accompanists. Please note that the solo must also be available with band accompaniment. Click here for as list of musical selections already arranged with band accompaniment in the Naval Academy Band music library. Please return all completed forms postmarked no later than February 1st. Due to logistical requirements, any applications received after this date will not be considered.

Rehearsal Rehearsal CONCERT We will provide each student with their parts for all the music on the concert so they may practice before the first ensemble rehearsal. You will note that all rehearsals are scheduled outside of normal school hours in order to best accommodate Anne Arundel Public School policy. Due to continued increased security restrictions, students are not able to drive onto the Naval Academy without a valid DOD sticker and dependent military ID card. However, if you complete a Temporary Access Pass form and return it by February 1st, a pass will be mailed to you, giving you temporary access. Otherwise, students are advised to park in town and walk. All should enter through Gate 1, which is the entrance closest to the Annapolis City Dock. All visitors to the Academy are required to present a photo ID for admittance, and all cases, packages, etc., are subject to inspection by gate sentries! Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to working with each of you for this special event. If you need any additional information, please contact Chief Musician Karl Schultz at 410-293-1252.
