Homework 2
The purpose of this homework is to ensure you have installed VMWare
correctly. Do not worry if you do not understand everything you are typing it
will be explained as the course progresses.
This assignment is designed to be completed after Lab 1.
For this assignment:
1. First
you need to get VMWare Player working.
Do this:
- Install the Windows
version of VMWare
Player. (after clicking on the VMWare link, click on Download, then
find the Windows version, which is probably the first link. You want
VMWare Player, *not* the version that includes "API" in the
name. You’ll probably need to
reboot afterwards.
NOTE: When you run VMMare player, it will sometimes ask you to 'update'
to VMWare Workstation - this is a paid upgrade to a more advanced
product that you don't need, so ignore.
- Download and unzip
the Virtual
Machine image. (note: this is big and will take a while)
- Start VMWare player,
then open and run the image you downloaded above.
Important note: once running, there is an icon in the top right corner
that controls the network connection. It may look empty, or it may look
like two arrows (one up and one down). In either case, you probably need
to click on it, then click something like "Auto eth2" to
re-connect the network access.
- You'll sometimes need
this: the password is "gonavy" (no quotes).
- Now we will use VMWare
Player:
1. Under
Part 2 of lab 1, complete steps 1-7.
2. In
place of step 3 copy the following code:
#include <iostream>
int main () {
std::cout << "Midn YOURNAMEHERE YOURALPHAHERE installed VMWare
correctly!" << std::endl;
return 0;
}
- Enter your name and alpha at the appropriate points in the code.
- Complete the steps to compile, link, and run your code.
- Take a screenshot of your program running, print it, and turn it in
to your instructor at the beginning of the next lecture period (help on a
screenshot is below)
Obtaining a Screen Shot:
1. Click on the the top of the Window containing
VMWare Player (NOT within VMWare player, or else the paste below won’t work)
2.
Press
Alt-printscreen to “capture the screen shot”
3.
Now inside
Windows (NOT inside VMWare), open Microsoft Paint (Start -> All programs
-> Accessories -> Paint) (or use Microsoft Word).
4.
Paste the image into
Paint/Word by selecting Edit -> paste
5.
Print the image
by selecting File -> print
