HOW TO SETUP PUTTY TO DO X11 FORWARDING 0. Make sure you have installed Xming already. Find the Xming icon on the desktop and double-click, or else find it in the Start Menu and select it. Note that when you start it, be sure you select it, but then it will not appear to do anything -- that is normal, it is running in the background and waiting for the steps below. 1. Open PuTTy by double-clicking its icon. 2. On the left, expand "Connection" (if not already expanded) and then expand "SSH". 3. You should see X11. Click on it. 4. On the right, check "Enable X11 forwarding" and type the following in the text box next to "X display location" : type only this --> localhost:0 <-- -- That's it for the X11 forwarding stuff, now on to connecting -- 5. On the left, click "Session" 6. Enter the host name of one of the lab computers 7. Enter that same host name under "Saved Sessions" (within the same window) 8. Click "Save" then "Open" 9. Login using your NADN account username and password. 10. Once you see the terminal prompt, type gnome-terminal and hit Enter. 11. You should now see the same terminal you get when physically at the computers in the lab. From there, you can open gedit, gvim, or emacs to get a graphical text editor. 12. Now that you have saved your settings, subsequent connections to the lab can be done by merely double-clicking on the hostname that appears in the text box left of the "Load, Save, Delete" buttons. 13. If you have trouble, go back and try the steps above again. If you get an error like "Cannot open display", this probably means that Xming is not running, or that you forgot one of the putty steps above. Credits: LT J. Schultz
