World War I was ultimately disastrous for the
Ottoman Empire, despite some early successes
at Gallipoli on the Dardanelles and Kut in Iraq
Greece was torn between the Triple Entente and
the Central Powers and exhausted by
continuous war from 1913-1922
During the period 1914-1922, there were:
2,500,000 estimated Ottoman Muslim deaths (approx.
18% of the total Ottoman Muslim population)
1,500,000 Ottoman Christian deaths (approx. 35% of
the total Ottoman Muslim population)
