RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE AND ARMENIAN
DEPORTATION:
As the Ottomans were being attacked in the Middle East
by the British and Arabs, the Russians invaded Anatolia
from the East in 1915.
By mid-1916, the Russian army had reached Erzurum
March 1917: Russian Revolution halted the advance,
leaving any Russian sympathizers, including many
Armenians behind.
Armenians became perceived by Ottoman Turks as
siding with Russians as a group.
1915-1918: Ottomans deported many Armenians from
Anatolia to Syria and Lebanon.
Hundreds of thousands starved to death in these relocations.
This episode remains very controversial because of
disagreements about the complicity of the Ottoman government
in these acts.
