It is said that God revealed to Samuel that the Israelite who was taller than his rod would be the king. When he found this person, he was to annoint him with the holy oil from a particular horn, and he would then be king. So Samuel went about and measured everyone with this rod. He could not find anyone tall enough except for Saul. When he found him he annointed him and made him king over the Israelites. It is said that Saul was great in battle, that he was tall, and that he was handsome.
