5. Solve a linear equation in two variables

Example. Use a graphing calculator to solve 2x - 3y + 6 = 0 for y.

Solution: Use the home screen and the algebra menu ( ).

Display the home screen and clear it:   8 Clear entry line:

Display algebra menu and select ‘solve’:  1

Enter the equation, a comma, the variable to be solved for, right parentheses:

2 x  3 y  y

The answer is displayed as: y =

This may be expanded:   (places the above expression on the entry line)

Finish by:

The answer is now displayed as: y =

Problem. Use a graphing calculator to solve 3x - 2y - 5 = 0 for y. Then solve it for x.
