Installing GAP 4.3 in Windows
GAP
is a free computer algebra system. Though originally
developed for groups, it now has algebraic and number-theoretic
capabilites. For more information, go to
About GAP.
For expert help with GAP, see the
GAP Forum archives.
This version is intended for USNA students. It is not
an official release and is not officially
supported by GAP.
Unless you are a USNA student, please do not ask for help
from me or the GAP Forum
if you have trouble with the installation of this version!
-
Download the file
gap43.exe
anywhere on your PC. This file is about 65 M. It may be deleted
later.
-
Double click on the self-extracting file
gap43.exe file. This will automatically
create a directory c:\gap4r3 and decompress GAP
in this directory. It will be about 150 M when unzipped.
- When this is done, start GAP by double clicking on
gapw95.exe in c:\gap4r3\bin. This will require about 15 M of RAM.
- (Optional) To create a gap shortcut on your desktop:
-
right click on the file gapw95.exe in c:\gap4r3\bin
and select "create shortcut",
-
drag the newly created file to the desktop,
-
right click on this file, select properties,
-
click on the "change icon" button,
select "browse" and find the file
gapicon.bmp (it will be looking for icon
files, so you need to look for "all files"
in the "Files of type:" box).
-
Select this and click okay.
If you prefer, there is a zip file
gap43.zip.
Use winzip with the
directories and folders preserved option
(or in DOS type pkunzip -d -o gap43.zip at the c: prompt) to unzip.
To access the Grobner bases routines, after starting GAP,
type
Read("c:\gap4r3\teaching\read.g");
at the GAP prompt.
