Title:

But How Does This Math Stuff Apply To What I’ll Be Doing In The Real Navy?

Abstract: LCDR Joe Skufca will be give a brief description of how mathematics is used by the submarine officer, with focus on two specific areas. First, how is mathematics and theory applied within the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program, both in the training pipeline and in the fleet, with some specifics as to the types of problems that might be addressed on board a submarine and how that problem is solved. Secondly, how are mathematics used in the actual operations of the warship, with specific examples of the problems that a Submarine Officer would be expected to solve on a day-to-day basis.

Be forewarned there is nothing advanced about this topic. No new theorems to discuss. No bold conjectures to pass along as unsolved problems. This lecture will provide some concrete examples of how what you do (in teaching the midshipmen) fits into the system.
