USNA Pure Mathematics Seminar

The talks for the academic year 2008-2009 are held Wednesdays in the 3rd floor seminar room of Chauvenet Hall at 3:45 pm unless otherwise stated.

Speaker:

Caroline Melles

Title:

Amoebas, tropical curves, and enumeration of algebraic curves

Abstract: A tropical curve may be viewed as an amoeba defined over a suitable field. The goal of this talk is to show how amoebas of algebraic curves are related to tropical curves, and to give some idea why the enumerative geometry of tropical curves can be used to gain information about the geometry of algebraic curves.

Time: 3:45, Wednesday April 15, 2009

Reception before talk.
