Abstract: Continuous semigroups of endomorphisms acting on factors were introduced by R. Powers in connection with an index theory for derivations of von Neumann algebras and were subsequently studied by several authors, most notably by R. Powers and W. Arveson, in the case of the type I_{inffinity} factor B(H). Such semigroups also appear in Quantum Field Theory as well as in dilation theory of Markov semigroups. In the talk we will address questions relating to semigroups of endomorphisms of factors of type II1 with emphasis on examples of the hyperfinite II1 factor and the free group factors.
