Title:

What is a Hopf algebra?

Abstract: Hopf algebras originated in algebraic topology, but have since proved useful in many parts of algebra and combinatorics; in the past few years they have proliferated in the guise of "quantum groups". We will discuss the definition of a Hopf algebra and some motivations for it. We will also discuss a variety of interesting examples.

Time: Wednesday, September 9, 1998

Reception at 3:30 in the common room on the 3rd floor of Chauvenet Hall.
