Philip Osterlund, while a grad student at Univ. Minn., wrote
the GAP (version 3) package
Abstab.g which could be used to help solve the
Rubik's cube (and other permutation puzzles).
According to Alexander Hulpke:
"AbStab has not been ported to GAP4. However (as of GAP4.4) the code for
expressing elements as words in generators has substantially improved,
utilizing methods similar to AbStab. (e.g. for Rubik's Cube I obtain
length ~100 words). I am not aware of any general approach (i.e. not
tuned to Rubik's cube) that does essentially better." See

on GAP commands related to this.
