These two capstone courses tie together all the courses covered in the engineering studies as a naval architecture student. In the fall semester course each student performs the preliminary design of a vessel in response to a loose Mission Statement provided by the professor. This will include the development of hull lines, arrangements, electrical, piping, powering and auxiliary systems. The "final exam" will be the submission of a design notebook and drawings detailing your design!

Also starting in the fall semester, but carrying through the spring semester, students form into teams of three or four and develop a design to meet their own Mission Statement. The design must be complex enough to demonstrate understanding of the basic systems inherent in ship design and tank testing of a model is required. Previous designs have included: patrol boats, motor yachts, tugs, fishing vessels, sailing vessels, special operations vessels, ferries, excursion boats and a submarine.
