SO503--Honors Research Methods


This course is taught during the spring semester to juniors in the oceanography honors program in the Oceanography Department at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Course Objectives:

  1. Learn the basics of using Matlab to access and manipulate scientific data sets.
  2. Apply basic statistical procedures to analyze scientific data.
  3. Understand the applications of remote sensing and geographic information systems to gathering oceanographic and meteorological data.
  4. Use modern instruments to gather oceanographic data.
  5. Understand the procedures for setting up a scientific research program.
  6. Understand some of the significant problem areas of modern oceanography.
