Earthquake Locations

This lab will consist of two parts:

  1. You will take the oldest reference in your annotated bibliography, and look it up in Web of Science.  Get two papers that cite it, and make a reference list in the correct format for the original paper and the two new ones.  You will then get a classmate to verify that the format is correct.
  2. Complete the requirements below for the earthquake aftershocks in Japan or Haiti.

Go to http://www.globalcmt.org//Events/

If you are in companies 1-20, get the ndk format file for Haiti.  If you are in companies 21-30, get the ndk format file for Tohoku.  Note that the bottom of the page has a description of the  format (http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/~gcmt/projects/CMT/catalog/allorder.ndk_explained  ), and that there is a suggested citation for the data.

Extract the following information from the file, and write it to a CSV file that you could import into a GIS:

Produce maps with the earthquakes color coded by depth and magnitude.

Import data into MICRODEM, and recreate the two maps there.

Discuss what you did, including a reference to the data source, and compare the mapping capabilities of the two programs.
