SO503 Final Exam
Spring 2007
1. The file Travel_to_52402.txt contains distances and depths for the route from the epicenter of the 2007 Solomon Islands tsunami-generating earthquake to Buoy 52402.
The depths are average depths along the path taken from the Smith and Sandwell predicted bathymetry data set. Why is this the best available data for this purpose, and how was the data set generated?
How long did it take the tsunami to get to this bouy, what was the average rate of speed, and what uniform ocean depth would provide this rate of speed?
Based on the depths from Smith and Sandwell, what is your best estimate of how long the wave should take? Insure that your method is clearly indicated, and how you get the correct units. How does this number compare with what you did for the lab, and why would you trust this number more?
2. Take the first 250 words from your paper, starting with the introduction. Count the number of passive verbs you used, and rewrite those sentences using an active verb. Print out just the 250 words before and after you have rewritten them.
3. Correct the references cited section of your paper. Print this out in the correct format.
4. Take the first 10 citations in the body of your paper. Verify that they are correct, and if not, state what is wrong with them. Print out the paper, and prominently number the references in the margins and put either an OK or the correction. Base your analysis on what you turned in, and not any corrections you make to the references cited.
