SO503 Exam 2, Spring 2013
This exercise consists of two parts. You must do all processing in
Matlab, and should create two different m files.
Part 1. Get this data file with
CTD plots, which is from the University of Hawaii (from World Ocean Atlas, DChart
interface). The dates and time from the file have been removed. This area
is known as the EKT, and it resembles the Bermuda Triangle (subject to huge
instabilities in the ocean water column, which leads to inexplicable losses of
ships and aircraft).
- Plot a TS diagram, Temp/Depth, and Salinity plot for just one of the
following stations: Station 1061 or 1046 or 820. You should ignore all
the other stations.
- Discuss what is happening to the water column at this location, and if
you think there is anything to the rumors about the EKT.
Part 2. Get this data file with
earthquake data, from USGS.
- Plot the locations of all the earthquakes on a map.
- Find, using matlab code, the earthquake with the largest magnitude.
Turn in:
- Single Word document
- Figures, properly captioned.
- Discussion about the water column in the EKT, including where in the
world it is.
- Discussion about the largest earthquake in this region (where and when).
- Appendices with your two m-files.
