Soft Matter and Nanomaterials Lab

Research interests: Directed self-assembly of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and quantum dots (QD) in liquid crystals (LC); Development of LC-CNT based nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS), micro-switching devices, and electromechanical memory functions; Order-disorder phenomena in soft-matter systems; Chirality; CNT induce chirality based phenomena in soft-matter systems; Liquid crystal phases and phase transitions; Nanoscopic imaging of complex fluids.

Synopsis: The remarkable physical phenomena of inter-molecular-communications between nanomaterials and complex-fluids at the nano scale level, by means of sharing inherent and intrinsic properties, in colloidal dispersions are a great deal of interest in fundamental physics. For instance, we have experimentally observed that in a dilute carbon nanotubes (CNTs) suspended liquid crystal (LC), the LC molecules transfer their long range orientational order onto CNTs, and on the other hand, suspended CNTs share their inherent surface chirality, intrinsic dielectric anisotropy, and electrical conductance with the adjacent LC molecules. Therefore, an LC+CNT hybrid system is a unique assemblage of an anisotropic nano-colloidal-dispersion in an anisotropic media, which makes it a fundamental area of research for realizing the nanoparticle-complex fluid interactions and the principles governing nanoparticle-self-assembly through nematic and smectic mediated platforms.
