Eighty years young, NAWC is a small non-profit organization. We have had ongoing scholarship/charity programs donating over $300,000 over the past several decades. In recent years, we have moved out of our immediate Naval Academy family and focused on our broader military family. Much of our work centers on the five Fisher Houses, located on the grounds of the Walter Reed National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda. Their mission is to house and comfort out-of-town military families of inpatients in greatest need at NNMC. They provide a stable, comfortable and affordable haven while their loved ones are undergoing medical treatment. The Fisher Houses offer a refuge and help renew the spirits and energy of families often dealing with life-threatening crises.
Another wonderful program is sponsored by Maryland Therapeutic Riding. The Horses for Heroes program is designed for wounded warriors returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Participants are active duty soldiers who are members of the Warriors in Transition Unit stationed at recovery locations in the Washington area. MTR provides therapeutic riding sessions, tailored specifically to meet their needs, which are helping restore these brave individuals physical and mental wellbeing through the healing powers of its horses, farm, staff and volunteers.
In an effort to give back to our local community, for the past few years we have supported the Young Engineers and Scientists (Y.E.S.) program here in Annapolis. Y.E.S. brings hands-on science and technology to local middle school girls. Our donation of tuition fees for four to six students yearly have allowed them to attend the weeklong program taught at the Naval Academy by female professional staff.
Join today and help us continue giving back to our communities!
