Navigation Course

NN204 Navigation and Piloting (2-2-3). Builds on concepts learned in NS100 and Third Class Summer cruise (LANTPATRAMID).  Specifically covers terrestrial, celestial, air and electronic navigation; tides and currents; and voyage planning. Prereq: NS100 and LANTPATRAMID. [summer, fall, spring]

Naval Science Courses

NS100 Fundamentals of Naval Science (3-2-4). Introduction to the basic concepts of seamanship, shiphandling, coastal piloting and engineering. Includes at-sea labs on 108' Yard Patrol Craft (YPs). Prereq: None, but must complete before participation in Third Class Summer Cruise (LANTPATRAMID). [spring and summer]

NS310 Strategy and Tactics (1-2-2). Course provides instruction on the basic elements of strategic thought in military operations to include works by Sun Tzu, Clausewitz, Jomini, Mahan, Corbett, Mitchell, and Boyd. Case studies are examined as well as current U.S. National, Joint, and Maritime strategy/doctrine and their applications. Instruction includes multi-ship operations, basic warfare tactics and naval force tactical planning. The application of basic warfare tactics is accomplished via use of Fleet Command, a commercial tactical gaming program. [fall ] . Prereq: NN204. [fall and spring]

NS486 Net Centric Warfare (3-0-3). This elective course provides an opportunity for Midshipmen to explore the present and future of warfare in the Information Age. Students examine the impact of information technology on contemporary life and the transformation of warfare as a result of the Information Revolution. They are introduced to the increasing use of information technology in warfare. In addition students examine emerging and asymmetrical threats and the new vulnerabilities created by increasing dependence on information technology for war fighting. Prereq: NS 310 [spring].

Junior Officer Practica

First class midshipmen are required to complete one of the following courses which are tailored towards the major warfare specialties available upon graduation.  Students are placed in the appropriate course after warfare selection is finalized

NS401 Junior Officer Practicum (Surface) (2-2-3). A course to provide information on the duties and responsibilities required of a junior officer in the surface community. Instruction includes operational procedures and practical applications of leadership and management principles tailored to the surface force.  Lab includes training in ship-handling and bridge watch-standing skills through the use of YPs and simulation software.  Prereq: NN204, NS310 and 1/C standing. [spring].

NS402 Junior Officer Practicum (Submarine) (2-2-3). A course to provide information on the duties and responsibilities required of a junior officer in the submarine community. Instruction includes operational procedures, and practical applications of leadership and management principles tailored to the submarine force. Lab includes submarine operations practical exercises through the use of  submarine simulation software. Prereq: NN204, NS310 and 1/C standing. [spring] 

NS403 Junior Officer Practicum (Aviation) (2-2-3). A course to provide information on the duties and responsibilities required of a junior officer in the aviation community. Instruction includes air navigation, tactics, operational procedures and practical applications of leadership and management principles tailored to the aviation force. Lab includes basic flight training through the use of flight simulator software. Prereq: NN204, NS310 and 1/C standing. [spring]

NS404 Junior Officer Practicum (Marine Corps) (2-2-3). A course to provide information on the duties and responsibilities required of a junior officer in the Marine Corps. Instruction includes land navigation, tactics, operational procedures and practical applications of leadership and management principles tailored to the Fleet Marine Force.  Lab includes basic land warfare skills and tactics through the use of outdoor activities and simulation software. Prereq: NN204, NS310 and 1/C standing. [spring]

NS405 Junior Officer Practicum (Special Warfare) (2-2-3). A course to provide information on the duties and responsibilities required of a junior officer in the SEAL community. This course introduces students to the existing SEAL’s command structure, the intricacies of small unit mission planning, the art of land navigation, SEAL-specific swimming skills, weapons handing as well as review of pertinent historic case studies.  Lab includes training in basic small unit skills and tactics through the use of outdoor activities and simulation software. Prereq: NN204, NS310 and 1/C standing. [spring] 

NS406 Junior Officer Practicum (Staff Corps) (2-2-3). A course to provide information on the duties and responsibilities required of a junior officer in the Staff Corps and Restricted Line communities to include the Supply Corps, Medical Corps, Intelligence, Cryptography, Civil Engineer Corps, etc. Students learn general Staff Corps/Restricted Line issues, plus have an opportunity to focus on their own community and receive mentorship from officers in that community. Topics covered include career path, preparation for indoctrination schools, and junior officer expectations. Lab includes mentorship and practical work within the student's selected community. Prereq: NN204, NS310 and 1/C standing. [spring]
