ALLIES
Simulation Exercise on Civil-Military
Interoperability
October 28 - 29 2009
About ALLIES and the 2009 Intellectual
Roundtable:
ALLIES is an undergraduate led initiative
that creates a bridge for shared
understanding between future civilian and
military leaders. The Intellectual
Roundtable, ALLIES' capstone event, brings
together practitioners from the military,
civilian government, civil society, and
private sector with the academic
community—from professors to civilian and
military students. Together, through the use
of guided, small-group discussions in
conjunction with panel presentations, these
disparate groups come together to discuss
issues surrounding civil-military relations,
relevant to all parts of society.
This year, for the first time, the
Intellectual Roundtable will be hosted by
the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership
and the Center for Middle East and Islamic
Studies at the United States Naval Academy,
and will include a politico-military crisis
scenario simulation exercise (SIMULEX),
facilitated by the Center for Applied
Strategic Learning at the National Defense
University in Washington, DC. With the
support of expert advisers, student
participants will assume the roles of
policymakers within relevant US government
agencies and, after being briefed on the
exercise scenarios, will attempt to
formulate appropriate and cohesive response
plans. The SIMULEX will provide students
with a unique opportunity to think
critically about how civil-military and
inter-agency coordination functions in a
crisis situation.
