Duties: This position is located at the Naval
Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI. Incumbent serves as instructor in
the Physics Department, which requires professional knowledge of
undergraduate physics, education, and information technology. Independently
researches, maintains, and improves course materials. Aids in determining
rigor and pace of courses and in developing curricular materials including
tests, assignment sheets, handouts, and/or computer courseware. Introduces
applicable computer courseware into the physics curriculum. Develops
curricula which may involve interdisciplinary subject matter, necessitating
discussions with recognized scholars at the United States Naval Academy
(USNA) and other institutions of higher learning, and with relevant
personnel at other military and governmental laboratories and agencies.
Assists the supervisor in the indoctrination and development of new
instructors, including effective teaching techniques and NAPS philosophy of
education. Assists all instructors in planning, classroom presentations, and
test construction. Takes the lead in and shares independent research with
department personnel.
Qualifications:
In addition to the Basic Requirements applicants must have one year
experience equivalent to the YA-02 in the Federal Service teaching
introductory physics or engineering (including labs and/or
recitation/discussion) at the high school, post-secondary preparatory school
or introductory undergraduate (two-or four-year college/university) level;
Experience participating in the development of instructional aids( e.g.
Power Point presentations/use of the computer in the classroom,
handouts/worksheets, group work/collaborative learning, etc); experience
participating in the development of curriculum (e.g., assisted in the
development of syllabi, course policies, objectives, etc.); experience using
computer software of any type (e.g., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and
Microsoft Power Point); and experience teaching a physics or engineering
course as part of a department containing multiple instructors.
The individual occupational requirements typically provide at least two
methods for applicants to meet the basic requirements of the occupations
covered by this standard:
Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in
a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in
education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus
appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge
comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of
the 4-year course of study described in A above.
