Return

Christine Jefferies

Blood stained soil
Sift through my wrinkled fingers
Clenched in my fists
My fists that held rifles
And hands
And hearts

Blood in the soil
Bleached in the sun
(But still there)
A sailor's blue cap
A boy, no less
Fell here, in this spot

His life given only
To what he knew best
Love of his country
Fighting for freedom

Two rounds, lying close
One ours, one theirs
Relics of rifles
Servants of screaming
What words did they use?
Words forgotten in seconds
Courage treasured for life

Return (to Iwo Jima)

Blood stained soil
Sift through my wrinkled fingers
Clenched in my fists
My fists that held rifles
And hands
And hearts
Blood in the soil
Bleached in the sun
(But still there)
A sailor's blue cap, a boy, no less
Fell here, in this spot
His life given only to what he knew best
Love of his country
Fighting for freedom
Two rounds, lying close
One ours, one theirs
Relics of rifles, servants of screaming
What words did they use?
Words forgotten in seconds
Courage treasured for life, and death
