Sonnet Three: My Love

Don Tennant II

I watched her tread so softly down the row
Between the chairs and down the aisle long;
Her footsteps were precise and ever slow,
But pulses quickened as she swept along.
Her wedding dress was made of satin lace;
A lump lay in my throat as she came near.
My heart stopped pumping as I watched her face,
Yet with my pounding head I couldn’t hear.
She then approached the altar, and the priest
Asked whether my love promised to be true.
By now my every vital movement ceased
As she became a wife and said, “I do.”
She left with her new husband; as for me,
I threw my ring for her into the sea.
