For 25 years the Labyrinth has featured poetry, short stories, original artwork, photography, and essays from the Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy. Dr Allan Lefcowitz, a former professor in the Academy’s English Department, was pivotal in getting this annual publication off the ground. In 1976 his creative writing class recognized the interest and need for publishing a literary magazine here at the Academy. Thus, the majority of the entries in the first issue came from that class, led by two of his students, Andrew Hegeman and Colin Sargent. The first edition of The Labyrinth
was published with a drawing of a labyrinth on the cover. The title
has a dual meaning. Physically, it refers to the Midshipmen’s dormitory,
Bancroft Hall, with its 4.8 miles of corridors and 33 acres of floor space.
Psychologically, it refers to all of the rules the Midshipmen must navigate.
