The USNA Men’s Soccer Club was organized in the fall of 1999 as a sports team that offers midshipmen a level of competitiveness which is unique from the varsity and intramural levels. The rigorous practice and game schedules of the Men’s Varsity Soccer demands a tremendous amount of time and energy from its members, and the USNA Intramural Soccer program lacks the intensity and structure for experienced soccer players. The Men’s Soccer Club was introduced in 1999 to span the gap between the varsity and intramural competitiveness levels. This median level of soccer gave experienced soccer players a high-level of competition without interfering with their other midshipmen obligations. Members of the club soccer team are active in the brigade, play in intramurals, and fully participate in summer training without Division I athletic requirements. In addition, the Men’s Soccer Club provided midshipmen with another leadership avenue to develop themselves morally, mentally, and physically. Teamwork and sportsmanship were emphasized at all team events, and peer leadership was vital to the functionality and longevity of the organization. Therefore, the purpose of the USNA Men’s Soccer Club will continue to provide midshipmen with a sports team that offers a unique level of competitiveness and another avenue to explore leadership at the academy.
