25 MARCH - This weekend was the first true test for your Navy Club team, and they passed in impressive fashion, tying the nationally ranked James Madison Club team. After giving up the opening goal fifteen minutes into the game, Navy responded with a goal of their own ten minutes later when Taylor Toombs hit a shot from twenty five yards out beating the keeper to the lower right side. From there the defense stepped up and completely shut down the JMU attack for the remainder of the half lead by Caleb Khan and Will Reiser in the back. After half Navy came out energized, grabbing the first goal of the half off a corner kick from Khan which Toombs placed in the back of the net for his second tally of the day. Navy dominated the pitch for the better part of the second half, lead by solid midfield leadership and outstanding play from the entire team. With twenty minutes left in the game JMU came back and scored off a cross to the back post which barely beat goalkeeper Andrew Ventresca. Navy dominated the pitch for most of the game, striking the cross bar on four occasions and forcing the JMU defense to make big play after big play. For only playing together for three weeks and then going into a nationally ranked opponents home field Navy looked like the dominant team. From here the sky is the limit.
CLEMSON SPRING SHIN DIG - What a weekend; Navy Club Soccer
established themselves as one of the dominate teams in the region. It
was a long weekend, with four games on Saturday and one more on Sunday, all
highlighted by Navy's unbelievable defense, allowing zero goals on the
weekend. In the first game of the tournament Navy matched up against
UNC Charlotte. The majority of the game was played in Navy's offensive
third with Navy's defense controlling the tempo of the game and the offense
keeping pressure on an overmatched Charlotte team. The loan goal of
the contest came with ten minutes left, when Dominic Iacopino was fouled in
front of the Charlotte net, and Andy Krebs slotting in a perfect PK.
The second game pitted two sound
defenses against each other, limiting the opponent to several poor chances
on goal. Navy's best opportunity came off a free kick from twenty five
yards out, just missing the heads of several Navy players. Overall the
game was played in the middle of the pitch, with neither team able to get
anything really going. Navy's defense of Caleb Khan, Will Reiser, Hugh
Anderson and Brett Disher, anchored by goalie Mike Lindsey, never allowed
Florida's potent attack any opportunities to score, holding them to zero
shots on goal despite playing with ten players for most of the game.
In the final game of group play,
Navy's attack stepped up lead by Warren Kurz's two goals, and completely
dominating the field from touchline to touchline in a rain soaked game.
In the first half Andy Krebs took a well played ball and beat USC's keeper
to the left side placing Navy up 1-0 five minutes in. For the rest of
the half Navy controlled the tempo but was unable to put the ball in the
back of the net despite being up two players. The second half saw the
Navy offense explode for three goals in the thirty five minute half, the
first one coming from Warren Kurz early in the half. Only ten minutes
later Dominic Iacopino scored to put Navy up 3-0 with a beautiful shot 12 yards
out. The final goal came on a break away with under a minute left as Kurz again beat the keeper, securing Navy a spot in the Quarter Finals that
night.
The Quarter Finals were dominated
again by Navy despite playing their fourth game on the day. Navy
allowed only one Xavier shot on goal in the game which saw a torrential
downpour for most of it. After playing the entire game and both
overtimes and no goals the game moved on to penalty kicks. Hugh
Anderson placed a perfect shot to the bottom right side beating Xavier's
keeper to put Navy up 1-0 in the best of five. Xavier's first round
shooter stepped up and hit a well placed shot that was knocked away by Mike
Lindsey who made an unbelievable play on the ball. Dominic Iacopino
placed his shot in the back of the net, putting Navy in the driver's seat up
2-0. Xavier's next shot was again saved by a diving Lindsey.
Will Reiser stepped up and blasted a shot past the Xavier keeper, nearly
ensuring a Navy win, and guaranteed when Xavier's final shooter failed to
place his shot in the back of the net.
On Sunday morning Navy played the
Semifinal's against an evenly matched Georgia team. Navy controlled
the game, barely missing scoring opportunity after opportunity and ending
the first half in a 0-0 tie. The second half saw more the same as the
first, with Navy again knocking on Georgia's goal. Iacopino hit the
crossbar with a twenty yard shot, and Caleb Khan did the same off a set play
from eighteen yards out. Despite dominating Navy could not find the
back of the net, and the game went into a shootout. Navy's first
shooter, Anderson, placed his shot into the back of the net, which was
matched by Georgia's shooter. Navy's next shooter, Iacopino made good
on his shot which was matched by Mike Lindsey making a outstanding save on
Georgia's next shot. Unfortunately from there things went downhill.
Will Rieser made his shot which was matched by Georgia. Georgia's
goalie made a great save on the next shot and then buried theirs to send the
game into sudden death penalties. The day ended with Matt Agnew's shot
being saved by Georgia's keeper who came up with save after save all day to
give his team the win.
For the weekend Navy was unstoppable and one of
the top teams at the tournament. The Mike Lindsey and the defense
allowed ZERO goals and Navy found ways to win in every game they played.
They were impressive in all aspects of the game, their teamwork was
unparalleled and their overall dominance was apparent to all the teams
present in Clemson.
