Education

The Center for Chesapeake Bay Observation and Modeling (CCBOM) is dedicated to enhancing undergraduate as well as other levels of education through experimental and simulation activities geared toward understanding the Chesapeake Bay marine environment.

Students in the Ocean Engineering Program at the U.S. Naval Academy have actively participated in supporting the establishment of the center, including completion of or involvement in the following activities:

  • EN411: Ocean Environmental Engineering I course: Students acquired and analyzed CTD and other instrument cast data at two locations in the Chesapeake Bay as part of a course laboratory exercise.
  • EN245: Principles of Ocean Systems Engineering (introduction to ocean engineering) course: Students acquired side scan survey data of the Chesapeake Bay bottom.
  • EN496: Independent Research in Naval Engineering: An independent research student is developing a permanent platform for a suite of the center's instrumentation.
  • EN462: Ocean Systems Engineering Design II : A team of students is developing a Lagrangian drifter for comparison with and calibration of the Center's numerical models and other analytical products.

More information and resources will be available soon.

Students acquire oceanographic data aboard the YP-686 during class.
