Schedule
The USNA timeline
for National Engineers Week is delayed one week from the national
effort due to X-Week conflict. The Saturday events were
rescheduled because of local area school closings due to inclement
weather.
Event
Summaries:
High School
Design Competitions - This event takes place in Rickover Hall on
Sat
22 Feb 01 Mar
[29 Mar] from 0800 - 1200. The competitions center around four design
projects; electric boat kit (ECE Dept), paper airplanes (Aero Dept),
bridge (Mech Eng), and mouse trap car (Mech Eng). Prof Brad Bishop,
Systems Engineering, is event coordinator. In addition, each
engineering department sets out a static display to stimulate
student interest throughout the events. Prof George Piper, Systems
Engineering, is the high school liaison. Last year approximately 70
students took part in the event from South River, North County,
Broadneck, and Annapolis high schools. Shuttle service from the
stadium parking lot is being coordinated by LCDR Dulla, Electrical
Engineering. CDR Carr, Mechanical Engineering, is the event
spokesman. Modest breakfast beverages will be provided by USNA.
Prizes and awards are presented by the Engineering and Weapons
Division Director.
Static
Displays - In order to stimulate interest in science and
engineering among midshipman, a static display will be set up in the
open foyer along the Michelson/Chauvenet lower deck hallway. Recent
design projects and research will be on display for the midshipman
to examine on their transit to and from classes during NEW. LCDR
Dulla is coordinating this effort. This is an addition to past
efforts.
Female
Engineer Luncheon - A key portion of the national effort is to
draw more females into the fields of science and engineering. LT
Montgomery, Mechanical Engineering, is heading up an effort with
assistance from Dr. Delores Etter, Electrical Engineering, to host a
female engineer luncheon with a guest speaker on Wednesday, 26 Feb. Rear Admiral Kathleen K. Paige,
Ballistic Missile Defense System Technical Coordinator, will be the
featured speaker.
Engineering
Lecture (Raouf) - The annual Raouf Lecture will take place
on 27 Feb at noon in R102 and will feature a presentation entitled "The
Re-Invention of David Bushnell's TURTLE" by Professor Lew
Nuckols of the NA&OE department. The researchers and
midshipmen have been involved in the Bushnell's Turtle Project to
reconstruct the 'Turtle' and recreate its historic undersea warfare
mission during the American Revolution. In addition to Professor Nuckols, LCDR Rich
Schoenwiesner, 1/C Jim Vandevoort, and 1/C Doug Raineault will be present
to answer questions and relate their experiences.
