Dr. John McMullen, USNA Class of 1940 


Dr. John J. McMullen graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1940 and served onboard the  USS Yorktown (CV-5) and USS Stack (DD-406) during the Second World War.  Following the Korean War and fourteen years of service, he left the navy and established John J. McMullen and Associates, which developed into a world-renowned naval architectural firm.  Dr. McMullen holds a professional degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from MIT and a PhD in technical studies from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.  He is the former owner of the Houston Astros baseball team and the New Jersey Devils hockey team.  Dr. McMullen is a founding director of the Naval Academy Foundation; established the Distinguished Leadership Chair; and is a member of the Superintendent’s Society, the Naval Academy Foundation’s President’s Circle, and the Robert Means Thompson Society.  In 2000 the Naval Academy Alumni Association awarded Dr. McMullen’s its highest honor, designating him a Distinguished Graduate.
