Workhorse Navigator Doppler Velocity Log

Doppler Velocity Log (DVL)

The Workhorse Navigator Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) is new to the vehicle this year. It replaced the Self-Contained Explorer Doppler Velocity Log, also manufactured by Teledyne RD Instruments. The 2010 USNA AUV team used the Workhorse Navigator so successfully that they achieved 2nd place, and we hope to emulate those results.

Romulus relies heavily on the DVL for navigation. The majority of our navigation is done by dead reckoning. This requires a high degree of accuracy when estimating position and velocity. We have done extensive testing to ensure that the Workhorse Navigator DVL remains consistent, for we believe that our performance in the pool directly reflects the reliability of the DVL.

We initially began with the DVL from the 2011 vehicle but were having inconsistencies with the outputs, decreasing the reliability. Because accurate navigation is key to success, we chose to revive the Workhorse Navigator. This choice in DVL has proven successful and we anticipate a consistently successful performance in the competition.
