Associate Provost for Planning and Assessment


Katherine Cermak joined the Office of the Provost at the U.S. Naval Academy as the Assistant Dean for Planning and Assessment in the summer of 2012, and was promoted to Associate level in 2015.  In her role, Dean Cermak works with the Academic Effectiveness Board and Faculty Senate Assessment Committee, facilitates strategic planning efforts; coordinates assessment efforts; consults on assessment of student learning issues and develops related educational activities for USNA faculty. Dr. Cermak serves as the liaison with external accreditors (MSCHE and ABET) for assessment and institutional effectiveness related issues.

Prior to joining the Naval Academy, Dr. Cermak served in a variety of roles at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois from 2002 to 2012. At DePaul, Dr. Cermak supported the Academic Program Review process, strategic planning initiatives, and preparations for the university's Higher Learning Commission (HLC) institutional accreditation visit in 2007. From July 2007 to July 2012, her primary focus was the assessment of student learning, but also included founding a fall university-wide teaching symposium focusing on the goals of the general education program; cochairing the annual faculty conference an event in which faculty shared their experiences and teaching practices centered around a theme and nationally recognized keynote speakers; developing content for DePaul University's Teaching Commons website; and teaching research methods in the School of Public Service.

Prior to joining DePaul University, Katherine Cermak was the coordinator of the Judicial Development Project funded through a grant of the Illinois Supreme Court.

Dr. Cermak holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Loyola University Chicago, her research focused on identifying factors associated with student retention and graduation in higher education.
