USNA Privacy Program

Federal privacy laws require agencies to "establish appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to ensure the security and confidentiality of records to protect against any anticipated threats or hazards to their security or integrity." The loss or compromise of personally identifiable information can lead to identity theft, which directly impacts Department personnel, contractors, retirees, and their dependents. Safeguards must be applied to IT systems, shared drives, computer networks, email, paper records, and web sites to ensure privacy of personal information.

Personally Identifiable Information (PII).  Information used to distinguish or trace an individual’s identity, such as name; Social Security Number (SSN); date and place of birth; mother’s maiden name; biometric records; home phone number; or other demographic, personal, medical, and financial information.  PII includes any information that is linkable to a specified individual, alone, or when combined with other personal identifying information.
