Program Student Outcomes for Aerospace Engineering

Program Student Outcomes (PSOs) for the Aerospace Engineering major are the 16 Level 2 outcomes of our Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate syllabus (see, which are enumerated in the table below. From a systems engineering perspective, PEOs define requirements that flow down to mold PSOs as performance requirements, which must be functionally mapped (and specifically allocated) to the outcomes of specific courses in the Aerospace Engineering program. These outcomes correlate to the ABET Criterion 3, (a) through (k), outcomes and have been affirmed and validated by multiple visiting ABET assessment teams as being sufficient to meet program criteria.

Technical Skills

1.1  Demonstrate a capacity to use the principles of the underlying sciences of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. (ABET 3a)

1.2  Apply the principles of core engineering fundamentals. (ABET 3a)

1.3  Demonstrate deep working knowledge of professional engineering. (ABET 3a, 3k)


Personal and Professional Skills

2.1 Analyze and solve engineering problems. (ABET 3e)

2.2 Conduct inquiry and experimentation in engineering problems. (ABET 3b, 3k)

2.3 Think holistically and systemically. (ABET 3c)

2.4 Master personal skills that contribute to successful engineering practice: initiative, flexibility, creativity, curiosity, and time management. (ABET 3i)

2.5 Master professional skills that contribute to successful engineering practice: professional ethics, integrity, and currency in the field, career planning. (ABET 3f, 3i, 3k)


Interpersonal Skills

3.1 Lead and work in teams. (ABET 3d)

3.2 Communicate effectively in writing, in electronic form, in graphic media, and in oral presentations. (ABET 3g)


CDIO System Skills

4.1 Recognize the importance of the fleet/FMF (Fleet Marine Force)/societal context in air power and space power engineering practices. (ABET 3c, 3h, 3j)

4.2 Appreciate different enterprise cultures and work successfully in organizations (ABET 3c, 3h)

4.3 Conceive engineering systems including setting requirements, defining functions, modeling, and managing projects. (ABET 3c)

4.4 Design complex aerospace systems. (ABET 3c)
