EE486: Brain-Machine Interfaces

An introduction to the field of neuroengineering that provides practical education in technologies that interact with the nervous system for therapeutic or rehabilitative purposes.  Examples include retinal prostheses for the blind; cochlear implants for the deaf;  brain-driven limb prostheses for paralyzed patients and amputees; implantable devices for detecting and interrupting epileptic seizures; and neurally controlled platforms for helping ALS patients operate computers.   The course develops the fundamental concepts from neuroscience, machine learning, and signal processing required to understand how these devices interpret and respond to brain signals while simultaneously examining the devices at the system level through directed readings of the recent scientific and engineering literature.  Specific topics include basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology for engineers and statistical techniques for the dimensionality reduction, de-noising, classification, clustering, and spectral analysis of neural signals.
