Profile

Dr. Shaun Baker is a native of Dallas, TX, and lived in and around the Dallas area until 1993. He then moved to Detroit Michigan to pursue post-graduate studies in philosophy. Dr. Baker joined the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership in 2006.

At the Center he coaches the Naval Academy Ethics Debate team, which takes part in several competitions across the country each year. The Naval Academy team are the 2023 National Champions of the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition. In past years Dr. Baker has served as member of a team that produced several of our interactive ethics simulations, and an interactive electronic ethics and leadership volume, Ethics for the Junior Officer.

Each year he teaches a course, “Stockdale – Philosopher and Fighter Pilot,” centering on the writings of Vice Admiral Jim Stockdale, which draws from his prolific writings after his return from North Vietnam. That course germinated the book Dr. Baker authored, Stockdale-Moralist, Jurist, Teacher, Steward and Philosopher. Dr. Baker also designed and teaches the course "Philosophy at the Movies," which uses motion pictures as a vehicle for the exploration of philosophical and ethical concepts and issues. Before moving to Maryland, he spent 10 years in Michigan, teaching at the University of Michigan Dearborn, Wayne State University, Oakland University, Schoolcraft College, and Mid-Michigan Community College.

He earned his B.A. from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1992 and his Ph.D. in 1999 from Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. Aside from teaching philosophy at the University and College levels, he also spent 3 years teaching writing and computer skills at the Methodist Children's Home Society group home in Detroit Michigan.

Before that, he taught Middle and High School level English, History and Government at the International Academy of Flint charter school located in Flint Michigan. He also ran a philosophy club at that institution.
