Lieutenant Commander Misty Wynett Odom is a native of Houston, Texas. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1993 and attended basic training in Orlando, Florida. She earned a commission as a Surface Warfare Officer through the Seaman to Admiral Program after graduating with honors from Hampton University with a B.A. in Sociology in 2002.
As an Enlisted Sailor, Lieutenant Commander Odom served at several commands located in the Puget Sound area to include Naval Submarine Base Bangor (NSB) Tug Operations, NSB Personnel Liaison Representative Office, on the staff of Commander, Submarine Group NINE, and onboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) during the 1998-1999 Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf deployment in support of Operation DESERT FOX.
As a Division Officer, Lieutenant Commander Odom attended Surface Warfare Division Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island and Naval Justice School in San Diego, California. Upon graduation, she reported onboard USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (DDG 80) and served as the Admin Officer, Legal Officer, Auxiliaries Officer, and fleeted up as the Assistant Chief Engineer at the start of her second Division Officer tour. While onboard, she completed a Mediterranean deployment, INSURV, and spearheaded a plan that lead to the successful and early completion of the ship’s initial Engineering Certification.
In March 2006, Lieutenant Commander Odom reported to United States Naval Academy (USNA) and served as a Company Officer and the Brigade’s Sexual Assault Victim Intervention Liaison. She was selected as a member of the 2009 USNA Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) cohort and attended the University of Maryland, College Park where she earned a Master’s of Professional Studies in Leadership Education and Development.
In July 2010, Lieutenant Commander Odom reported onboard USS NICHOLAS (FFG 47) as the Combat Systems Officer. She later served as the Operations Officer, Coastal Riverine Squadron TWO in March 2012 where she meticulously led the merger efforts between Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron TWO and RIVRON TWO with great success.
In May 2014, Lieutenant Commander Odom served as the Assistant Officer-in-Charge, Coastal Riverine Group TWO, Detachment Bahrain where she led and managed over 300 Sailors executing a combat mission in three Areas of Responsibility.
In June 2015, Lieutenant Commander Odom graduated from Air Command and Staff College completing her JPME I requirements and earning a Masters of Military Operational Art and Science degree.
She is currently the Assistant Director, VADM Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the United States Naval Academy.
