POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The U.S. Naval Academy invites applications for the Class of ’61 Professor of Leadership Education to begin as early as January 2018 in the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Division

The Class of 1961 Professor of Leadership Education will take a leading role in expanding leadership education programs, mentoring junior faculty, advising and assisting the Chair of the Leadership, Ethics and Law (LEL) Department on leadership curriculum matters, teaching undergraduate core and elective courses, and conducting research and scholarship in leadership development.  The successful candidate must have a professional and academic background consistent with the demands of a prominent leadership role at an academically elite service academy. The Naval Academy is the nation’s premier source for developing leaders of character for the Navy and Marine Corps.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Curriculum Development. The PLE advises and assists the LEL Department Chair in the development and integration of new and existing core and elective courses and programs within the department and, as required, across USNA. The PLE reviews and assesses course offerings and collaborates in improving existing courses, developing new courses, and working with colleagues in other departments to expand leadership offerings. The PLE assists in LEAD division’s integration of the honor program, character development, and leadership education.
  2. Faculty Liaison. The PLE advises and assists the LEAD Division Director and LEL Department Chair in external relations with the Faculty Senate Committees, Commandant of Midshipmen, Academic Dean, and The Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership on matters pertaining to leadership education curricula. 
  3. Mentorship and Professional Faculty Development. The PLE mentors and advises junior military instructors and civilian faculty members on teaching pedagogy and skills development and serves as colleague and advisor to mid-grade and senior civilian and permanent military professors in the LEL Department. The PLE assists with planning and execution of the new and returning leadership instructor training/development programs.
  4. Teaching, Scholarship, and Research. The PLE teaches two core leadership course sections and one elective course section each semester. The PLE also serves as a representative of the LEAD Division at internal and external leadership conferences, presentations, meetings, lectures and colloquia. The PLE engages in productive research and scholarship on leadership education and development and produces at least one scholarly paper, report or professional publication each academic year.
  5. Curriculum Oversight, LEAD Masters Degree Program. The PLE assists the LEAD Program Manager with curriculum oversight and supervision of the USNA LEAD Masters Degree Program. Curriculum oversight responsibilities include: conducting periodic curriculum review, development, and assessment of courses and curricula included in the contract programs; conducting periodic programmatic and educational outcomes needs assessments and reviews; assisting USNA and USN program and logistics contract managers in the oversight, management and execution of the program contract; serve as academic liaison between USNA and the contract provider.

This is a 10-month gift funded position eligible for reappointment for terms of up to 3 years. Summer intersessional work assignments may be available based on recommendation from the Division Director.  If summer work assignments are not available or approved, the incumbent shall be placed in a leave without pay (LWOP) status from mid-June to mid-August during annual summer intersessional periods.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Ph.D. in a field central to leadership (e.g., organizational behavior, industrial and organizational psychology, social psychology, sociology, leadership development).
  • Leadership experience
  • United States Citizenship required.

Preferred:

  • Record of successful teaching, student advising, and faculty mentoring. 
  • Record of notable research and a stream of publications relevant to the field of leadership. 
  • Clear evidence of experience with and an understanding of the military culture.
  • Experience with donor stewardship
