POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the U.S. Naval Academy invites applications for the “Director, Influencer Development” position to begin as early as January 2022. USNA is a service academy and top tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in ethical leader development.  The Director oversees all aspects of the ethical leadership development program offered to those who influence the personal and professional development of the Brigade of Midshipmen.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the Director of the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.
  • Design an ethical leadership development program for those who influence the personal and professional development of the Brigade of Midshipmen, specifically the Academy’s staff, faculty and coaches.
  • Develop, monitor, and assess the operational plan for this ethical leadership development program.
  • Determine resource requirements for this ethical leadership development program.
  • Develop and present ethical leadership programming for staff, faculty and coaches.
  • Develop and oversee special events associated with this ethical leadership development program.
  • Identify and secure appropriate external experts who will engage USNA staff, faculty and coaches in presentations, workshops, virtual engagements, and other venues.
  • Employ psychometric instruments and leverage USNA data hosting systems to survey and assess the strengths and needs of USNA.
  • Work with the Director of the Stockdale Center Innovation Laboratory to explore innovative techniques to communicate ethical leadership concepts to the staff, faculty and coaches.
  • Provide briefings to new staff, faculty and coaches to introduce these new hires to Naval Academy ethical leadership principles and concepts.
  • Survey staff, faculty and coaches on a recurring basis to determine the developmental needs of this audience.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the program on a regular basis.
  • Prepare progress reports for the Director, Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership and donors who support the program.
  • Teach courses in the Leadership, Ethics and Law curriculum.
  • Assume other roles and responsibilities as determined by the Director, Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership.

This is a gift funded, federal excepted service position.  Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Graduate degree in the social or behavioral sciences; or a graduate degree in a related field with commensurate experience in leadership programming and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated mastery of current concepts and theories of ethical leadership development.
  • Experience teaching and facilitating, with excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Planning and budgeting skills.

Preferred:

  • Terminal Degree
  • Familiarity with psychometric surveys and behavioral analysis tools.
  • Existing scholarly research agenda involving leadership, ethics, or character.
  • Demonstrated success across a wide spectrum of leadership positions.
  • Understand the unique aspects of a service academy environment and the role of staff, faculty and coaches in the development of future military officers.
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in an educational and/or work environment and a willingness to contribute to the Naval Academy’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan

  • All Civilian Faculty Positions at USNA are subject to a background investigation. The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication.
