POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The United States Naval Academy invites applications for a Director of the STEM Center for Education and Outreach.  The Director of the STEM Center serves under the direction of the Academic Dean and Provost and provides oversight to the wide variety of STEM programs conducted both on site and away from the Naval Academy, consistent with the funding sources which support the Center’s activities. The Director impacts a significant percentage of Midshipmen throughout the Brigade, from all classes. The Director also impacts Department of Defense-wide initiatives to increase STEM focus among many thousands of young people across the country each year. This position serves as a supervisor, which requires the incumbent to provide technical and administrative direction to faculty, staff, and/or contractors within the STEM Center. This may include the responsibility to plan and schedule ongoing department activities on a quarterly and annual basis, or direct assignments of similar duration; adjust staffing levels within their organizational unit(s) to accommodate resource allocation decisions made at higher echelons; justify the purchase of new materials and equipment; oversee the development of technical data, estimates, statistics, suggestions, and other information useful to higher level managers in determining which goals and objectives to emphasize; decide the methodologies to use in achieving work goals and objectives, and in determining other management strategies.

Duties:

  • Supervise the STEM Center staff
  • Interact with participating faculty to provide STEM activities and events
  • Coordinate Midshipmen involvement in STEM activities and events designed to develop the attributes of the Midshipmen
  • Coordinate STEM programs with other cost centers at USNA to create collaborative programs of service to USNA
  • Support divisional and yard-wide activities focused on the STEM majors
  • Uphold the mission of the STEM Center to address the urgent Navy and national need for more young people to pursue careers in science and engineering
  • Develop and maintain funding sources for STEM Center programs
  • Develop additional STEM content to represent DoN/DoD initiatives and workforce development

This is a federal excepted service position.  This will be a full time (40 hrs per week), 12-month per year appointment during the initial 3-year contract period. Renewal of this appointment is anticipated and will be contingent on the performance of the incumbent during the contract period as well as the needs and emerging plans of the STEM Center for Education and Outreach.Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in a technical area.
  • Academic experience in critical technical areas, included but not limited to, engineering, applied physical sciences, and mathematics.
  • At least 3 years experience with STEM outreach
  • Evidence of administrative experience including evidence of financial and personnel management.
  • Evidence of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstration of technical expertise in STEM subject areas relevant to DoD and DoN workforce development.

Preferred:

  • Masters Degree in engineering or applied physical science or closely related field.
  • Technical or industrial experience in multiple areas of engineering, applied science, or mathematics.
  • Evidence of ability to obtain resources for program sustainment.
  • Evidence of aptitude in developing complex programs.
  • Willingness and availability to travel for remote STEM Events monthly.
