The U.S. Naval Academy’s Computer Science Department invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. This position is anticipated to begin in late July 2022.  A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, or closely related field is required.  Applications are encouraged from all relevant topical areas.

Applicants must have a dedication to teaching at the undergraduate level and a strong research program. Note that no military background is needed as this is a civilian faculty position. 

The department offers a Computer Science major (with 150 current students), and also leads a new interdisciplinary major in Data Science. We currently have a faculty of 16 members. The successful applicant can expect small class sizes (typically 10-20 students), a highly collaborative and collegial department, numerous opportunities for internal and external research collaboration, competitive compensation (including 10 months salary plus support for possible internal and external sources of summer salary), and excellent federal benefits.

The department is housed in Grace Hopper Hall, a brand new, state of the art building overlooking the scenic Severn River. Our spaces provide outstanding office, laboratory, and research facilities for both students and faculty, including specialized labs for robotics and networking, seven computing labs, as well as six dedicated faculty research and collaboration spaces.

The Naval Academy is an undergraduate institution located in historic downtown Annapolis, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay.  Roughly half of the faculty are tenured or tenure track civilian professors with Ph.D.s who balance teaching excellence with internationally recognized research programs.  The remaining faculty are active duty military officers with Masters or Doctoral degrees.  Each year the academy graduates roughly 1000 undergraduate students with majors in the sciences, engineering, and humanities.  More information about the department and the Academy can be found at USNA Computer Science Department and USNA.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in computer science and/or data science.
  • Execute a research program geared towards high-quality peer-reviewed publication in your area of expertise.
  • Contribute to institutional efforts such as curriculum development and advising students.

This is a 10-month federal excepted service position.  Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.



  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, or closely related field (anticipated completion of Ph.D. no later than June 2022 is acceptable).
