POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The U.S. Naval Academy invites applications for multiple tenure-track positions, with preference for those applying for Assistant Professor ranks, beginning in the Fall semester of 2024 or Spring semester of 2025 in the Department of Cyber Science in support of growing cybersecurity education initiatives.  These initiatives include a rapidly growing Cyber Operations major that is both ABET-accredited and designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO) and Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) by the National Security Agency - and a brand new, state-of-the-art building to support multi-disciplinary cybersecurity education and research.  Because of our position as a service academy and our collaborative activities within the military and government cybersecurity and intelligence communities, we provide a unique opportunity for our faculty to work with cybersecurity thought leaders from all over the world, and to impact an important program with a substantial global impact. Cyber Operations has become a top priority for the Department of Defense, which increasingly relies on technology and cyber space for warfighting capability, command and control, critical information exchange, and administrative needs. As a result, there is a growing demand for the United States Naval Academy to produce leaders with the appropriate awareness and skills to meet the nation’s operational cyber needs. 

Given the breadth of the topic, a variety of academic backgrounds are welcome to apply. 

Preference is given to applicants for the Assistant Professor position, but the committee also will consider applicants for the rank of Associate Professor.  Salary and appointment to an academic rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate courses focused on Cyber Operations
  • Academic research in the area of Cyber Operations
  • Mentoring of students and faculty

Candidates should have an interest in and understanding of cybersecurity or cyber operations as well as practical teaching and/or research experience involving areas such as (but not limited to) network security, systems security engineering, industrial control systems security, reverse engineering, cryptography, secure software development, web security, database security, cyber policy, or social engineering.

This is an onsite, 10-month compensation, excepted service federal faculty position with a 3-year renewable appointment, a highly competitive salary, and full federal benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a cyber-related field, which may include (but are not limited to) fields such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Science, Computer Security, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Public Policy, Political Science, and Cyber Policy is required (anticipated completion of the terminal degree no later than June 2024 for a Fall 2024 start is acceptable, and anticipated completion of the terminal degree no later than November 2024 for a Spring 2025 start is acceptable).
  • Successful candidates must be eligible and able to screen for a U.S. security clearance.

Preferred:

  • Well qualified candidates will have relevant cyber-related scholarship and teaching experience at the collegiate level.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • All Civilian Excepted Service/Faculty Positions at USNA are subject to a background investigation. The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication.
