The History Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor specializing in the history of race and ethnicity in the United States.  Preference is at the Assistant Professor level, but candidates with appropriate experience will be considered at the level of Associate Professor without tenure.  Candidates who focus on the twentieth-century, especially civil rights issues, are preferred. Employment will begin as early as the fall semester of 2023 (late July 2023).

We are especially interested in applicants who are eager to take a leadership role in furthering the History Department's active diversity and inclusion efforts through faculty teaching and research workshops, and by working directly with student organizations. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and to producing high-quality peer-reviewed research. They should be willing to teach service courses within the discipline, as well as courses in line with their professional research. Teaching expectation is typically 3 courses per semester with small section sizes (10-25 students) and 2-3 preps per year.

Duties and Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be expected to teach a survey course in either modern world history or, if they prefer, a survey of American naval history as part of the institution’s core curriculum.  They will also offer upper level courses in areas of specialization, as well as majors-only seminars. The teaching load is 3-3 with small section sizes and two to three preps a year.

This is a 10-month federal excepted service position.  Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.



  • A Ph.D. in History or in an appropriate field of study with a focus on the history of race and ethnicity in the United States (anticipated completion of Ph.D. no later than June 2023 is acceptable).  For ABD applicants, please also indicate your progress toward and expected timing of completion of the doctoral degree and include your dissertation supervisor as one of your references.


  • Candidates who focus on the twentieth-century, especially civil rights issues, in their teaching and research are preferred.
