POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The History Department at the United States Naval Academy is seeking applicants to fill a tenure-track position in U.S. history at the assistant professor level beginning in late July 2022.  Specialization and chronological scope are open, but the committee especially welcomes applicants with expertise in African American history, early/colonial history, or race and ethnic studies.

USNA is a service academy and a top-tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in faculty teaching and research. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and to producing high-quality peer-reviewed research. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in the world history sequence as part of the institution’s core curriculum and offer upper level courses in areas of specialization, as well as majors-only seminars.  The teaching load is 3-3 with small section sizes and two to three preps a year.

This is a 10-month federal excepted service position.  Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum:

  • A Ph.D. in History (anticipated completion of Ph.D. no later than June 2022 is acceptable).

Preferred:

  • The Department seeks teacher-scholars who are committed to inclusive pedagogy and either are committed to or have experience working with a diverse student body and faculty. 

  • Successful candidates will have demonstrated or show the potential to produce peer-reviewed scholarly publications.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • All Civilian Faculty Positions at USNA are subject to a background investigation. The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication.
