Colonel Jon M. Aytes, USMC, Director, Division of HUMSS
Col Aytes was raised in Reno, Nevada and graduated from the US Naval Academyin1990. Following commissioning and completion of flight training Col Aytes first operational tour was with VMAQ-3, a Marine EA-6B (Prowler) squadron based in MCAS Cherry Point, NC.
Assigned to the maintenance department in the squadron, he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea on the USS AMERICA (CV-66) in support of Operations DENY FLIGHT and DELIBERATE GUARD in the Bosnian Theater of Operations and served a subsequent deployment in Aviano, IT , in 1997.
The squadron was again engaged in operations in that theater supporting the UN Transition Assistance to Slovenia (UNTAES) and Operation SILVER WAKE in Albania. While serving with VMAQ-1, from 2000-2003, he deployed multiple times supporting Operations SOUTHERN WATCH, NORTHERN WATCH, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. He commanded Region 7, (North and West Africa) Marine Corps Embassy Security Group, from July 2007-2009.
Col Aytes’ other staff assignments have included MAGTFTC 29 Palms for a “payback tour” in the Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Division, then in the G-3, MAGTFTC; USJFCOM/Joint Staff J7, and Manpower Plans and Policy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs at HQMC.
Col Aytes graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1990 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. He is a 2000 Graduate from the Colorado School of Mines where he received a M.Sc. in Environmental Science and Engineering. He has completed Air War College (nonresident) and JPME 2 at the Joint Forces Staff College. His personal decorations include Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, and Air Medal with numeral 11 for strike/flight awards as well as the Combat distinguishing device.
